Pen Kit Plating
Plating pen kits utilizes a process where precious metals are electrically, chemically, or mechanically deposited onto the surface of the pen's parts.

Gold Plating: the most common pen finish, although many of the silver finishes have become more popular recently. Gold plating is ultimately not durable when exposed to abrasion. Even the best plating will eventually abrade - it just takes a lot longer to do it. Gold plating can be made more durable depending on the method used to plate, additives in the gold, and techniques employed. No matter what is done, all gold plating will wear off over time when abraded. This is simply a fact of physics as gold is a very soft metal. Plating other than gold can be very durable.

24K Upgrade Gold Plating: means that the parts are plated using the "rack method" and that small amounts of cobalt or palladium are added to the plating chemicals. In the "rack method", the parts are separated and plated individually on a "plating tree". This enhances the durability of the gold plating.

Titanium Gold Plating: produces the most durable gold pen kit plating available. The process used is called PVD (particle vapor deposition). In this process, Titanium nitride matched to the color of gold is molecularly bonded to the part and then 24K gold is bonded (sputtered) on the part to achieve a color match. The parts are again re-plated after this. The final result is that the parts will virtually never show wear.

Chrome: extremely durable and will last for many years under normal use. The chrome plated pen kits have become very popular in recent years reflecting a trend toward this look.

Platinum: offers a very durable hard plating. If you select a pen kit that uses real platinum rather than rhodium, it should be expected to hold up under normal careful use for many years.

Rhodium: used by the worlds premier pen manufacturers to plate their very finest pens. Rhodium is unmatched in brilliance and durability. Black Titanium/Gun Metal The black titanium process uses titanium oxide molecularly bonded (PVD). This plating is unbelievably hard and durable. It will last for many, many years. The black titanium plating process gives the pen kits a very unique and stylish look.

Copper: offers a unique beauty and warmth that begs to be held. Because Copper is soft by nature, these pens feature a durable epoxy layer on top of the copper plating to increase wear resistance.

Satin Series: undergo a special plating process that produces a matte finish that features a slight texture that looks and feels great. This popular plating offers a unique alternative to traditional plating.

Care of your new pen
All of our pens are made from the finest components but as with all things they require some care and maintenance.

Wood Pens: All the finishes I use are hard finishes but woods can be scratched with daily use. To protect the finish use a good furniture polish every so often. Never leave your pen in a hot car as the heat can damage the finish also. One more word on wood. Wood expands and contracts, some more then others. Some of the prettiest most exotic and expensive of woods tend to expand and contract more than others causing them to crack. I season these woods for at least 6 months after I receive them before using. I do not warrantee any wood not to crack.

Polyester Resins: As with wood, some maintenance is required. You can use any plastic or auto polish to keep and protect the finish. Avoid dropping as these products can be brittle. Dropping could damage the product.

Antler, Horn and other natural products: Treat the same as acrylics. Antler if not aged will crack, Water buffalo also could crack.

Fountain Pen Care:

Holding a Fountain Pen - Writing with a fountain pen is a little different from the ballpoint experience. You need to customize your pen's nib. Before you put ink in your pen, hold the pen as you normally would and "write on" a brown paper bag. This will wear the end of the nib to conform to the angle that you normally hold your pen. Do this for several minutes until the feel is smooth and comfortable. DO NOT apply too much pressure as the weight of the pen should be sufficient.

Using an ink cartridge - Select your ink with care. Private Reserve ink flows smoothly and gives a nice line. Insert the ink cartridge nipple end onto the nib assembly and push on firmly. Scribble with the pen nib to start the ink flowing. You may have to gently squeeze the cartridge to start the ink flowing. When the written lines fill completely, you are ready to use your pen. Don't be impatient; this may take a minute or two for the ink to begin to flow.

Choosing Ink - Be sure to use only high quality ink made for fountain pens. DO NOT use calligraphy ink as it will damage your feed.

Cleaning your Fountain Pen - Remove the cartridge or converter and rinse the nib under tepid water. It may be necessary to soak the nib in some cases if the nib feed is severely clogged. DO NOT use hot water or chemicals as this will damage the feed.
